It is easier than ever to get your business on the Internet these days. There are countless companies out there who are more than happy to take your money to get you started. The entire spectrum is available to you, from Do-It-Yourself online systems, to full-service, premium website development companies.

If this is the first step you are taking, you should ask yourself a few questions before you start (or you can skip right to PRICING now by clicking here ):

  • How much time do you have to invest in a website (both up front and ongoing)? If you are reading this, we will assume that you are not in the 100% Do-It-Yourself camp and you therefore need some professional assistance and advice.

  • Do you have a domain name picked out? A domain name is the website address or Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for your site (e.g. www.websurfpro.com). Having an easy to remember, easy to spell domain name is important. If you have a domain name that can be spelled many different ways, then you would be wise to either pick another name or reserve all the alternate spellings so you can redirect traffic to your main site. Additionally, selection of the top-level domain suffix (.com, .ca, .edu, .biz, .org) may be important for you depending on your business.

  • Do you know what features you want in your website? Websites can be 100% informational (a.k.a. static pages), or they can be a graphical front end to a complex online business system (e.g. online forms, e-store, customer database instances, online administrative management functions and tools, etc.). You can read about some of the available features here.

  • You will need to write down the purpose of your website and the experience you want your visitors to have. This flow, coupled with the features you need, are your requirements for any website development effort. The requirements should be sorted into three or so categories (the “must-have” items, the “should-have” items, and “would-be-nice-someday” items).

  • Once you have your requirements nailed, it is time to get a quote from a website development company. For that, you need to look at your overall budget. How much can you afford to develop today and how much can be done over time? Again, this assumes that someone will be doing the work for you.

  • Another question to consider is: do you have an understanding of how you want your website to evolve over a period of time (a 5 year plan is typical). Most good website service companies should be able to assist with this step as part of any initial consultation.

Of course, there are always more questions to consider, but these should at least get you on the right path. At WebSurfPro, we can help you every step of the way.

Check out some recent projects below. Keep in mind that aesthetics are subjective in nature. A website that looks good to you, may not be right for others. At WebSurfPro, we strive to stick to tested design standards to ensure maximum browser compatibility as well as to keep the user experience within the norm:
